Low Carb Stevia Sweetened Candy Bar
This isn’t a recipe, but something I came across in my many roaming’s around the grocery stores and internet. Since I’ve been trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners like Splenda and Aspartame, I’ve been looking to replace them with something more natural, like Stevia. It’s actually very difficult to find items sweetened with Stevia, so when I do run across them I like to try them out.
A company called Lily’s makes chocolate that is sweetened with Stevia. Some of their bars even carry the label “Stevia Sweetened” but if you look at the ingredients, you’ll see that it also contains Erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol. It’s not as bad as most of the others (like xylitol and maltitol) because it’s mostly absorbed in the small intestine.
But because it is sweetened with a combination of Stevia and Erythritol, it does have a fairly low (for a chocolate bar) carb count. So if you want a chocolate fix and don’t want to go all out carb-fest, you have an alternative.
My favorite is the Lily’s Dark Chocolate Bar with Almonds. The nutritional label reports that the bar contains 2 servings. That’s good, since many chocolate bars contain 3.5 or more servings and then a similar calories or carb count per serving, effectively doubling the carb / calorie count.
You can take a look, but to break it down, half a bar is 170 calories, which is one of the lowest calorie counts I’ve seen for half a bar. It’s 20 grams of carbs, but 12 of those are fiber, so we can cancel them out – they’re not going to impact your blood sugar significantly. Another 5 grams are the Erythritol, which will also have very little impact on blood sugar. That’s 17 grams accounted for, leaving a net carb count of 3 grams for half the candy bar or 6 grams for the entire bar. That’s great!
I’ve had these bars and they are good, but you can taste a hint of that Stevia after taste and the consistancy isn’t the same as the top of the line candy bars, but if you really just need a chocolate fix and don’t want to go completely off the reservation… check out Lily’s. If you can’t find them at your local grocery store – probably in the organic section – you can get them on Amazon:
